This Tibetan Buddhist music is so beautiful, I played it continuously while writing this page!

Om Mani Padme Hum (Om Mani Padme Hung in Sanskirt) is the Mantra that the Tibetan people recite the most, young and old alike. It is not Om Mani Padme Om as some people may think.

Om Mani Padme Hum Tibetan Mantra

When is the 'Om Mani Padme Hum' or the Six Syllable Mantra used?

* When the news of a death or injury is heard, to pray for a speedy recovery, precious human rebirth or a safe journey through the bardo (intermediate state).

* When blowing on meat to wish the animal a precious human rebirth next time round. This is a shortcut as there are other more extensive Buddhist prayers that can be done

* When circumambulating a Stupa, Monastery or turning prayers wheels

* Sometimes even when someone wants to change the conversation from an unwanted or negative subject! I use this one sometimes myself!

*To give blessing to animals and other beings, you can blow on them or whisper it in their ear.

*In Tibetan Buddhist meditation or retreat, this mantra can be chanted quietly or silently. I use this mantra during my daily attempts to meditate. It is short and easy to pronounce.

*It is one of the beliefs in Buddhism that saying this many, many times will lessen the chances of being born in a lower realm in the future and it is also a cause for eventual enlightenment.

I have been known to chase the local trucks on occasion loaded with lovely pink pigs on their last journey to the slaughterhouse. I race beside the truck on my bike saying the Tibetan words just loud enough for the animals to hear. I am trying to bring them a bit of peace and courage for the unavoidable terror to come...

...Om Mani Padme Hum, the six syllable mantra, means that in dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha...

Sound complex? Yes, it is! Buddhism can be as complicated as it is vast. The simplest thing to remember about this powerful Tibetan Mantra is that it brings peace and joy to whoever says it or hears it.

If you find yourself in a difficult or stressful situation, it is incredibly beneficial to take a few seconds to breath deeply and slowly and repeat this mantra to yourself.

It has a very calming effect, try it!

Benefits of reciting the Six Syllable Mantra

Extracted from The Daily Enlightenment

This powerful mantra's sound and vibration invoke the blessings of all Buddhas to liberate the sufferings of all sentient beings. It removes negative karmas and defilements like greed, anger and ignorance that causes rebirth in the six realms of samsara. This mantra is so precious and holy that it embodies the Buddha's holy speech. By listening to it with faith and understanding, one is sure to obtain good rebirths after death. If any animal or insect should hear this mantra before dying, it would be reborn to Amitabha's Pure land. While reciting the mantra with mindfulness and a proper understanding , one is ensured of its effectiveness to increase positive merits and the spiritual power of compassion. By dedicating the merits of recitation to all beings and especially our loved ones in times of pain and sickness, all sufferings will dissolve.
